Saints ballpark renderings released; environmental study approved

New St. Paul Saints ballpark

The City of St. Paul has concluded a basic environmental assessment of the site for a proposed St. Paul Saints (independent; American Association) ballpark will suffice, paving the way for detailed planning to begin.

At the same time, the city released some renderings of the ballpark plan, revealing a much more conventional design than originally put forward by the Saints when the team was lobbying for the new facility. Fans down the first-base line will have a view of the ever-scenic Lafayette Bridge, while fans down the third-base line will have a view of the downtown skyline. In an unusual configuration, the first-base line will run southeast, while the third-base line will run northeast. (The view above is to the east; the view below is to the west.)

The decision to bypass a more formal environmental-impact study at the former Gillette plant means site demolition can take place this summer. The new ballpark is expected to open for the 2015 season.
