New for 2012: Schaumburg Boomers

Schaumburg Boomers

We have a name for the newest team in the independent Frontier League: the Schaumburg Boomers, who will begin play at Alexian Field in 2012.

As you can tell, a Boomer is a male prairie chicken. Here’s an explanation of the logo from the team:

The Schaumburg Boomers name comes from a nickname for the male Greater Prairie Chicken. Once found abundantly on the prairies of Illinois and throughout the Midwest and parts of Canada, the Greater Prairie Chicken now has a conservation rating of “vulnerable.” A boomer has a yellow-orange comb over its eyes and dark, elongated head feathers that can be raised along the neck in addition to circular, orange neck patches on the side of the neck which are inflated during lekking. The “booming call” produced by the male Greater Prairie Chicken can be heard up to a mile away during the mating season. Female prairie chickens have shorter head feathers and lack the yellow comb and orange neck patch.

The new team will play at Alexian Field, the former home of the Schumburg Flyers (independent; Northern League), a team unceremoniously dumped from their lease for nonpayment. The ballpark has been empty this year.

The new team is owned by Chicago attorney Pat Salvi, also the owner of the Gary-SouthShore RailCats (independent; American Association).
