According to a report from the Houston Chronicle, the University of Houston will formally name the playing surface at its ballpark in honor of Don Sanders.
University of Houston baseball plays its game at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park, often referred to as Schroeder Park. The university is reportedly set to give the facility a slight name change, however, as a dedication of the playing surface will lead to it becoming Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park.
Sanders, a businessman and philanthropist, has contributed to the ballpark before. He and Joe Gutierrez provided the University of Houston funding for a new ballpark scoreboard in 2015, and Sanders is also part of Ryan-Sanders Baseball, the ownership group of the Round Rock Express (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League). Citing an unnamed source, the Houston Chronicle reports that the dedication of the playing field in Sanders’ honor will be the result of a “substantial gift”:
The University of Houston has received a ‘substantial gift’ for the naming rights to the field at its baseball stadium, a source said Thursday.
The new name will be Don Sanders Field at Darryl & Lori Schroeder Park. Sanders is a well-known local businessman and philanthropist.
Schroeder Park originally opened in 1995.
