Aiming for 2021 Opening, Boise State Picks Ballpark Contractor

Boise State has chosen a contractor for its planned on-campus ballpark, which it is aiming to complete in time for the 2021 college baseball season.

For the 2020 season, Boise State’s baseball program will play home games at Memorial Stadium, the home of the Boise Hawks (Short Season A; Northwest League). That is intended to be a temporary arrangement until the university can complete construction on a planned new on-campus ballpark, and now new details on that project are emerging.

Gardner Company will serve as the contractor, Boise State officials revealed this week. Some steps remain in the planning process, but that appointment represents a notable step as Boise State pushes for a 2021 completion of the facility. More from the Idaho Statesman:

Boise State has chosen a contractor for its on-campus baseball stadium, according to school spokesman Greg Hahn.

The school has selected the Gardner Company, which built the Zions Bank building downtown and has been involved in a lot of Treasure Valley development the past 10 years, Hahn said in an email. The school is “shooting” for the stadium to open in March 2021, the second season for the Boise State baseball program, he said.

A design of the field is ongoing. Once the design is completed, the Idaho State Board of Education must give construction approval, Hahn said.

Boise State announced in 2017 that it would launch a new baseball program in the 2020 season. It was initially believed that the university could share a proposed ballpark with the Hawks, but Boise State announced in October 2017 that it would instead pursue its own on-campus baseball facility, citing economic reasons. The university later acquired land near football’s Albertstons Stadium for the facility, but announced in February that it would not open in 2020 as originally scheduled. In April, Boise State revealed that it would explore the idea of joining the Hawks and a planned professional soccer club in Division II USL Championship at a proposed venue on Boise’s West End, only to refocus its efforts on building an on-campus ballpark.
