Now that the Augusta GreenJackets (Low A; Sally League) have played their final game at the facility, city officials are discussing the future of Lake Olmstead Stadium.
On Labor Day, the GreenJackets closed out their run at Lake Olmstead Stadium by playing their final game of the 2017 season. The team is slated to move into a new North Augusta, SC venue–SRP Park–at the start of the 2018 season, and indications to this point are that the facility will be ready for the GreenJackets’ home opener on April 12.
Augusta officials are now discussing what could happen to Lake Olmstead Stadium in the future. The GreenJackets have already have a $25,000 lease in place for 2018–a potential contingent if SRP Park is not ready on schedule–and could once again sublease the facility to Augusta University for the use of its baseball program. City leaders believe that, down the road, the ballpark could still be used for various events, while Augusta University officials would like for the baseball program to be considered in the facility’s future. “I would like to put some competition on some events that are happening in Augusta in the past that are now happening in Columbia County,” says Commissioner Andrew Jefferson.
But Augusta University say baseball should continue to happen at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
“We’ve been playing ball at Lake Olmstead for the last for our five years so it’s definitely a fine facility we’ll see what the city thinks is in the best interest of the city and we’ll do what in the best interest of Augusta University,” said Athletic Director Clint Bryant.
If Labor Day does prove to be the GreenJackets’ final game at Lake Olmstead Stadium, they will have closed out their run at the ballpark in fashion, as they defeated the Charleston RiverDogs 8-2.
