A cleanup of contaminated soil is taking place at the site of a new Augusta GreenJackets‘ (Low A; Sally league) ballpark, but it is not expected to affect the facility’s opening.
Construction is underway on the new GreenJackets’ ballpark in North Augusta, SC. The facility is a centerpiece of the Riverside Village at Hammond’s Ferry, and is on track to be of the first pieces of that development in place when it opens next year.
Currently, one of the major tasks taking place at the site is the cleanup of contaminated soil. Much of the soil was found to be concentrated in a portion near what will eventually be the new ballpark’s outfield, but officials report that the contamination is not hazardous and that work is not slowing down construction. According to James Dean, the city’s owner’s representative for the project, the current pace of construction will still allow the facility to open in April 2018. More from the Aiken Standard:
Dean said despite the contaminated soil and recent heavy rains, the baseball stadium is moving forward on schedule. It’s expected to open by April 2018.
“In spite of all the rain and all these issues, we keep on marching,” Dean said. “I think overall we’re really pleased with the progress. We’re confident we’re going to meet all the date requirements.”
In addition to the new GreenJackets’ ballpark, the development will include office space, residences, lodging, retail, and more. The GreenJackets are currently playing what is slated to be their final season at Lake Olmstead Stadium, and have already reported strong ticket sales numbers for the new ballpark’s inaugural season.
