A would-be terrorist targeting fans at a Chicago Cubs game at Wrigley Field with a bomb placed in a trash can has pleaded guilty to charges and will be spending at least 20 years in prison.
Sami Samir Hassoun, 24, pleaded guilty in federal court “to attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and trying to use an explosive to damage or destroy a building used in interstate commerce in Chicago,” reports Bloomberg. There was never any danger of a bomb actually detonating: Hassoun was the target of a sting operation and was under surveillance by the FBI, which provided Hassoun with a “bomb” that was really a paint can filled with ball bearings. He was arrested in September 2010.
Sentencing is scheduled for August 15.
