The relaunch of the Northern League happened 20 years ago — really! — and the Sioux City Explorers are marking the occasion with a new commemorative logo.
Out of the original six teams in the independent circuit, three are still in business in their original markets: the Explorers, the Sioux Falls Pheasants (originally the Canaries) and the St. Paul Saints. (Two original teams are still in business after relocation: Rochester moved to Winnipeg, and Duluth-Superior moved to Kansas City.) All three are still together in the American Association, while the Northern League is no more.
In recognition of 20 years, the X’s used roman numerals to represent the number 20, while tying in the traditional Sioux City “X” logo on top of white and black pinstripes symbolizing the uniforms the team wore during the inaugural 1993 season.
