The Lake County Captains teamed up with a local cartoonist for a unique giveaway this weekend: an eight-page comic book featuring a game between the Captains and a passel of space aiiens. The tie-in: the national Free Comic Book Day.

The special eight-page comic book was given away to the first 1,000 fans, ages 12 and under, attending the Captains' Saturday May 1 home game.

Started in 2002, Free Comic Book Day is held each year on the first Saturday in May. During this special day, people all across the United States and Canada are invited to go to their local comic book speciality store and receive a free comic book courtesy of a number of major comic book publishers. Thom Zahler and his Timberlake, Ohio based Maerkle Press are “silver” sponsors of Free Comic Book Day, spotlighting Zahler’s popular “Love and Capes” comic book.

While the Lake County Captains have teamed with Zahler in both 2007 and 2008 to distribute Love and Capes to their fans on Free Comic Book Day, this is the first time any organization has created their own comic book to distribute as an exclusive tie-in. Co-sponsored by Comic Haven of Willoughby and Laronge Wagner Realty of Mayfield, Ohio, “Captains Comics” featured team characters including: Captain Clipper, Skipper, Skippy, Grover and the three fish: Willy Walleye, Buster Bluegill and Pauley Perch. The story was written and illustrated by Zahler.

iPod and iPad users can download the whole comic by using the Panelfly application, available in the iTunes store via this link.
