The New Orleans Baby Cakes (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) are preparing to rebrand in time for their 2020 move to Wichita, as suggestions for a new name are being accepted.
Following the 2019 season, the Baby Cakes will relocate to Wichita, KS, where a new ballpark is being planned for the former site of Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. As part of its move, the club will assume a new identity in Wichita, and the process for rebranding the team is underway.
Suggestions for a new name that will take effect in 2020 are now being accepted. Participants can suggest possible names online, with submissions being accepted through January 21. More from the Wichita Eagle:
The team has put out the call for suggestions for a new name on its Facebook and Twitter pages. Those social media sites link to a page at www.milb.com/milb/forms/wichita-name-the-team where fans can submit what they want the team to be called.
“We invite you to suggest names along with your reasons for those names and also help us better understand your beloved city, one which we are excited to call our new home,” the invitation reads. “Is there something from Wichita’s cowboy or aviation roots that makes the best name? Is there something undeniably unique to Wichita that would make the best name? Or is there another name that will proclaim the future of Wichita to the rest of the world?”
A February groundbreaking has been expected for the new $75 million ballpark, which is slated to open in time for the 2020 season. When the club makes its Wichita debut, it will mark the first time that the city has hosted an affiliated minor-league squad since the Wichita Wranglers (Class AA; Texas League) moved to Northwest Arkansas after the 2007 season.
