Jim Hoynes says he’s folding the North County Cannons (independent; American West Baseball League) after failing to come to a lease agreement with Cal State San Marcos.
The team was to debut in 2013 along with the rest of the AWBL.
“It was the best thing to do right now,” Hoynes told the Union-Tribune. “It’s still my dream and goal to bring minor-league baseball to the county. I’m new to this, but I’ve certainly learned a lot in the last 10 months.”
It’s not as though San Marcos would have been the ideal place for a team: Hoynes was pledging to temporarily expand the grandstand and erect temporary lights.
The loss of the Cannons doesn’t bode well for the AWBL, now down to three teams: the Nogales Desert Ghosts, an unnamed Las Cruces team (playing at Apodaca Park, a former Pecos League home) and the Fullerton Flyers, which in the past was slated as a road team.
