This year’s big summer concert: Wilco and Andrew Bird

WilcoWe’ve been bemoaning the lack of any big summer concerts at minor-league ballparks, but we have a good one to report: Wilco and Andrew Bird at Fifth Third Bank Ballpark.

Playing the home of the Kane County Cougars (Low Class A; Midwest League) makes sense for the Chicago-based Wilco, which has been on continuous tour to promote The Whole Love since last summer. (We’re a little biased: Wilco is a big fave in the Ballpark Digest offices.) It’s a Chicago-themed event: one of the openers, eclectic and often sunning Andrew Bird, grew up in Lake Forest and attended Northwestern University, with The Congregation (an eight-piece soul band) on the bill as well. To end the night: fireworks.

The concert has been scheduled for July 8, with tickets on sale Saturday, April 8 at 10 a.m. Central. Wilco’s reps say more outdoor summer events are still to be announced; let’s hope there’s another ballpark visit in the list.
