Upgrades on tap for Grand Junction’s Suplizio Field; MiLB to follow?

Pioneer LeagueThe Grand Junction (Col.) City Council reviewed expansion plans for Suplizio Field that include a new two-story hospitality space and press box, as the city prepares for more of the Junior College World Series — and maybe a rookie Pioneer League team.

It’s no secret new Casper Ghosts (rookie; Pioneer League) owners Dick and Charlie Monfort — who also happen to own the Colorado Rockies — have looked at Grand Junction as a home for the team, at one point exploring a plan for a new ballpark and the team managed by a prominent management firm in baseball.

There seems to be little talk of a new ballpark, though, now that Grand Junction is moving ahead with renovations to Suplizio Field, the home of the JUCO World Series. A $8.3-million renovation, slated to be done in 2012, will add a two-story addition with hospitality space on one level and a press box on the other. A new mezzanine level will add handicapped seating, while bleachers on the first-base side will be replaced with chairback seating. Also on the list: a new concourse with concessions and restrooms.

Interestingly, the facility may be a little too large for Pioneer League baseball: Suplizio Field holds 12,000.
