Well, this is certainly being milked to good effect: the name-the-team contest for the new Biloxi Southern League team is being extended yet again, for a week.
Over 48,000 votes have been cast (an average of 95 votes per hour since the contest began on June 2.), according to team officials. The six finalists — as chosen by the fans during the name submission phases — are Beacon, Black Jacks, Mullets, Schooners, Shrimpers and Shuckers. You can read more about the names and their backgrounds here. The team is slated to begin play at MGM Park next season.
Votes have come in from six continents (North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Europe, and Oceania). Of all the cities where votes are coming in from, Ocean Springs leads the way with nearly 15 percent of the total votes cast. Nashville, Tennessee has even contributed to 3.5 percent of the total votes received.
