The irrepressible Tim Bennett is back with another proposal for affiliated baseball in the Biloxi area, this time in the neighboring town of Gulfport.
He’s floating a proposal for a new ballpark — presumably for a Class AA Southern League team (at one time Bennett was in talks to buy that circuit’s Jackson Generals when the team was known as the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx) — at a state-owned port off U.S. 90 next to the newly renovated city harbor. He’s met with Gulfport officials about land availability and potential funding sources and is now getting the word out about the project:
“I think Mississippi is a great place for baseball,” Bennett told Biloxi Sun-Herald reporters. “and the Gulf Coast just seems the next reasonable location for baseball.”
Bennett was a player in the move of the Greenville Braves (Class AA; Southern League) to Pearl, Mississippi.
Of course, all the planning is preliminary; we expect to hear more about it in coming months.
