Canseco signs with Rio Grande, misses first game

Jose Canseco

Just days after declaring bankruptcy, Jose Canseco signed a contract with the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (independent; North American League) — and promptly missed his scheduled debut.

Canseco, who parted ways with the Worcester Tornadoes (independent; Can-Am League) earlier this season after just 20 games, was scheduled to make his WhiteWings 2012 debut Saturday night and meet with the press Sunday. The game went on sans Canseco and the presser was scrapped; the ever-convenient “family emergency” was to blame. He’s now scheduled to join the WhiteWings on the road and make his home debut Thursday.

It’s not Canseco’s first run in the circuit: he played previously for the Laredo Broncos.
