Jose Canseco, the flamboyant baseball star who started the season with the Worcester Tornadoes (independent; Can-Am League), has filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
Canseco filed yesterday in Las Vegas.
The filing listed $20,850 in assets and $1.686 million in liabilities, including $506,000 owed to the IRS.
Canseco, still listed on the Tornadoes roster as an inactive player, hasn’t played since June 16 and compiled some bad numbers before that (.194 BA, 1 HR, 7 RBI). He reportedly signed with the Tornadoes for $100,000 monthly, but it’s not clear whether his presence gave the Tornadoes a lift at the box office: as of yesterday the team is averaging 1,591 fans a game, below 2011’s average of 1,782 fans a game.
