Blink and you’ll miss it: the 2012 baseball season has already begun

NCAA BaseballFans pining for the day when pitchers and catchers report for spring training should note that their passion may be a little misplaced: the 2012 season opened over the weekend, with college squads already scrimmaging.

The college kids don’t waste a lot of time getting into action; as you can see here, the University of South Carolina Gamecocks were drawing fans to Carolina Stadium to witness the first scrimmages of the year Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Those of us living in climes where there’s still plenty of snow in the forecast may not realize how fervent college-ball fans can be, but South Carolina wasn’t the only college team to draw fans to its open scrimmages over the weekend.

South Carolina’s first game, by the way, is set for Feb. 17 — well before the date when most teams have position players report for spring training.
