The ownership of Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium, the home of the Kannapolis Intimidators (Low Class A; Sally League), is now clear: the City of Kannapolis is buying it from Rowan County, paying $3 million over 50 years — and not paying interest.
For the mathematically challenged, that’s $60,000 a year. We shudder to think about how little $60,000 will buy in 50 years.
The deal ends a long-running battle between the city and the county over who pays for what at the ballpark — and it resolves some uncertainly for the Smith family, the owners of the Intimidators.
The two government entities have owned Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium since it opened in 1995 but sparred over the actual ownership split and who was responsible for maintenance and improvements. The spat has continued for years, but last month Rowan County Commissioners offered to either buy out Kannapolis or sell its share to the city for $3 million.
