The former home of the International League's Maine Guides is hosting a national college tourney this week, with more baseball scheduled in coming weeks.
The Ballpark at Old Orchard Beach, the former home of the Maine Guides (Class AAA; International League) that had fallen into deep disrepair only to be revived by hard-working volunteers, saw its first activity in years, as the United States College Athletic Association's national baseball tournament began yesterday with opening ceremonies.
City officials had looked at tearing down the facility after a fire damaged the grandstand, but volunteers fixed up the facility, regroomed the playing field and made other repairs to infrastructure.
In addition to the tourney, the Brockton Rox and the Quebec Capitales of the independent Can-Am Association will play a pair of games there May 22-23. There's been talk of more baseball there as well: at least summer-collegiate league has made inquiries.
