It seems hard to believe, but some of the summer-collegiate leagues are close to the end of the season. Both the New York Collegiate Baseball League and Florida Collegiate Summer League wrap up this week, with the NYCBL reporting some solid attendance increases.
The NYCBL's Elmira Pioneers drew 17,676 fans to the club's 20 home games at Dunn Field for the 2009 season, an average of 878 per game and an increase of over 9,000 fans from 2008. The figure is the highest in the club's four seasons in the NYCBL.
The Pioneers had six crowds of over 1,000 on the year, including a throng of 2,078 at Corning, Inc., Night on July 21; 1,578 at St. Joseph's Hospital Night on June 13; and 1,408 to the club's home opener on June 10.
Elmira finished third in the circuit in attendance. The league saw over 100,000 fans come through the turnstiles in 2009. Amsterdam led the way with an average of 1,405 fans per game, while Watertown averaged over 1,100 per game. Glens Falls and Mohawk Valley (Little Falls) also drew over 10,000 fans on the season.
“We're thrilled with the support that the Pioneers received this season. Baseball is alive and well in Elmira,” general manager Hoffman Wolff said.
