A federal omnibus spending bill passed by the House includes $3.8 million for the renovation of Tiger Stadium.
The Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy has until March 1 to show the city of Detroit it can raise enough money to renovate the original Navin Field grandstand at Tiger Stadium. The city has already demolished most of the historic ballpark, which opened the same day as Fenway Park. The new leader of the Conservancy, Thomas Linn, says another $27 million is available via tax credits and other sources. The cost of renovation is at least $27 million.
The Senate needs to pass its version of the omnibus spending bill; Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) has been a forceful advocate for the Tiger Stadium spending.
