Normally we don’t get into this sort of discussion when those outside the baseball community try to get a jump on an official announcement, but word has broken about one potential new name of the Reading Phillies (Class AA; Eastern League): the Reading Fightin’ Phillies.
Now, for those of you who have never been part of a rebranding exercise, here’s what happens: a team and their consultants — in this case, Brandiose — will come up with a slate of potential team names. In this case, we know the R-Phils chose Fightins as a potential team name because team management registered three domain names related to the Reading Fightin’ Phillies: readingfightins.com, readingfightinphillies.com and readingfightinphils.com. The Reading Eagle puts forward a team name of Reading Fightins, but don’t get too infatuated with that name just yet.
It’s a pretty crappy thing to leak information like this; not giving the team a chance to make a big marketing announcement is pretty bush league. Especially when your research is sloppy and incomplete.
