As unveiled by High Point, NC officials Tuesday, a planned development project will lead to several amenities surrounding BB&T Point, the city’s new ballpark.
BB&T Point is currently under construction in downtown High Point, and is set to open in 2019 as the home for a team in the independent Atlantic League. The ballpark has been intended as the anchor of a larger development concept, and plans for what will surround the facility are beginning to take shape.
The concept for an $83 project, dubbed High Point 2.0, was unveiled Tuesday. It calls for a 120-room hotel, along with two mixed-use office buildings, an apartment building, and more. While this provides a more immediate sign of new development in downtown High Point, officials believe that additional economic activity will follow. More from Spectrum News Triad:
“I really believe that what you’re going to see today is the first phase of the rebirth of downtown High Point,” said High Point Mayor Jay Wagner.
[Wagner] stressed that High Point 2.0 is just the first phase of a revitalization in the city’s downtown.
“You’re going to see a lot more to come, and as this train gets rolling, you’re going to see a lot more people jump on board,” said Wagner.
The project will include a 120-room hotel with restaurants and shops; 2 mixed-use office buildings with retail space, along with an apartment building and parking deck.
“We’re not just bricks and mortar people, we want people to understand that we breathe life into the places that we try and build,” said Developer Tim Elliot with Elliot Sidewalk Communities.
Under the current timeline, construction on the development will be completed in 2021. Ground was broken in April for the new ballpark, which will be designed to host a variety of events in addition to baseball.
The High Point team was officially approved by Atlantic League members in March. The Atlantic League is playing with seven teams and a travel team in 2018; barring any additional teams, the new High Point team will replace the Road Warriors in 2019. The new High Point club will be the league’s first in the state of North Carolina.
