Officials in High Point, NC will celebrate a milestone on Wednesday morning, as they are to break ground on a new downtown ballpark.
The new High Point ballpark is slated to open next year for a team in the independent Atlantic League. As it has been envisioned, the facility will anchor a larger downtown development plan and host a variety of events in addition to Atlantic League games.
Demolition of existing buildings began late last year to clear way for the project, and now the ballpark’s groundbreaking ceremony is on tap. Scheduled for Wednesday morning at 11:30 local time, the ceremony is also expected to include the reveal of the ballpark’s name and logo. More from WFMY News:
On Wednesday the construction site on North Elm Street will start to see movement. High Point Baseball announced the groundbreaking of the new stadium for April 11th at 11:30 a.m. In addition to the traditional turning of dirt, the organization says the name and logo of the new stadium will be announced. BB&T is the entitlement partner.
The project approved by the council is supposed to create 500 job as well as add dozens of shops, restaurants and places to live. The stadium will be the center of new development. Dr. Nido Qubein of High Point University pledged $50 million from private donors to build up around the stadium.
The High Point team was officially approved by Atlantic League members in March. The Atlantic League will play with seven teams and a travel team in 2018; barring any additional teams, the new High Point team will replace the Road Warriors in 2019. The new High Point club will be the league’s first in the state of North Carolina.
