We have an official name for the upcoming downtown High Point Atlantic League ballpark, as it will be known as BB&T Point.
BB&T’s involvement in the project has been known since last year, but more details were released during a ballpark ground breaking ceremony on Wednesday. The High Point ballpark will be known as BB&T Point, and is currently expected to open in 2019 for a team in the independent Atlantic League.
In addition to Atlantic League games, BB&T Point is expected to host a variety of other events. It is also envisioned as the anchor of a larger redevelopment project in downtown High Point. More from the News & Record:
The General Assembly’s Joint Legislative Government Commission voted unanimously in early December to let the city borrow up to $38 million for the project.
High Point University President Nido Qubein has spearheaded millions in private fundraising to help build the stadium, as well as, a children’s museum, park and other spaces near the ballpark.
BB&T is the naming-rights partner for a few other ballparks around professional baseball, but the BB&T Point name in High Point should avoid any confusion with the BB&T Ballpark moniker that is used for the homes of the Winston-Salem Dash (High A; Carolina League) and Charlotte Knights (Class AAA; International League). The BB&T name is also used on BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field, home of the Williamsport Crosscutters (Short Season A; NY-Penn League).
The High Point team was officially approved by Atlantic League members in March. The Atlantic League will play with seven teams and a travel team in 2018; barring any additional teams, the new High Point team will replace the Road Warriors in 2019. The new High Point club will be the league’s first in the state of North Carolina.
