Mud Hens to install putt-putt golf on Fifth Third Field turf after season

Fifth Third Field, Toledo Mud Hens

Well, this takes the cake for the most imaginative offseason use for a ballpark we’ve seen: the Toledo Mud Hens (Class AAA; International League) are converting the Fifth Third Field playing field to a putt-putt golf course after the season.

An 18-hole miniature golf course, no less. The Links at Fifth Third Field opens to the public September 25-28.

“I always thought it would be interesting to see a natural grass putt-putt course,” says Jake Tyler, Sports Turf Manager. “The timing is perfect to create this once in a lifetime opportunity for our community.”

The Links at Fifth Third Field will be flat with no rolling hills and slopes, but it will be challenging. The first nine holes will have angles, dog legs, and sand traps. The back nine gets confusing when the fairway of 14 and 15 intersect each other and hole 17 may be the hardest because it finishes up on top of the pitcher’s mound.”

It will take up to two weeks for Tyler and his grounds crew to cut the course into the turf.

The course will be open to the public from Thursday, September 25 through Sunday, September 28. Admission is $15 with a portion of the proceeds benefiting area charities. Each player receives a souvenir Links at Fifth Third Field golf ball.

It will be a busy offseason for Fifth Third Field: after putt-putt season the ballpark will host an outdoor hockey rink for Walleye Winterfest. The Mud Hens also own and operate the ECHL’s Toledo Walleyes.
