Full-season leagues wrapped up their seasons yesterday. In the Double-A Eastern League, the Richmond Flying Squirrels claimed the circuit’s attendance title for the first time since 2010.
The MiLB regular season isn’t done yet — the Pioneer League ends next weekend — but the full-season leagues are entering the playoffs. In Richmond, where the postseason is not on the agenda, the Squirrels finished the season averaging 6,688 fans per opening. That was 367 more than the next closest Eastern League club, the Reading Fightin Phils.
The average eclipses the previous franchise record, which was 6,679, established in 2011. The Squirrels last led the league in attendance during their inaugural season in 2010. Reading had led the circuit each of the last two years.
We’ll have our full attendance listings once the Pioneer League ends its regular season on Sept. 9.
