Fredericksburg, Opening Day Partners talking new ballpark

Atlantic LeaguePeter Kirk and Opening Day Partners are discussing a new ballpark and independent Atlantic League franchise with city and county officials in the Fredericksburg, Virginia area.

Joining the group: Jack Lavoie, an attorney who attempted to bring Atlantic League baseball to Frederick, Maryland when the lease to Harry Grove Stadium was up for bid this offseason.

Frederickburg is part of the greater Washington, D.C. area. Its population isn’t that much — just 24,000 or so — but the area is considerably larger when you add in Spotsylvania County and its 124,000 or so in population and Stafford County and its 129,000 in population. In fact, Stafford County is one of the more affluent counties in the country. So there’s a solid base for RBI (Rappahannock Baseball Initiative) to attract fans. No word on how far any talks have proceeded; it’s mostly been discussions between ODP folks and area volunteers.

Kirk has been on a roll as of late opening Atlantic League ballparks; his Sugar Land Skeeters lead the league in attendance.
