The challenge for the St. Joseph Mustangs (summer collegiate; MINK League) this summer: continue winning while pumping up the attendance at Phil Welch Stadium.
The Mustangs are owned by Rick Muntean, a name that should be familiar to many in minor-league circles: he’s worked in affiliated and indy ball since 1983. He’s now living the dream in St. Joseph, running a summer-collegiate team and figuring out how to draw fans to the ballpark. The challenge this year: bringing more fans to the ballpark with more promotions and some interesting plans, like setting aside a section of seating for local high schoolers, presumably to raise the energy level at the ballpark.
The Mustangs play at historic Phil Welch Stadium, a former minor-league ballpark built with WPA funds that also hosted Negro Leagues games as part of a regular barnstorming circuit that included Kansas City and Des Moines.
