Blue Wahoos a hit in Pensacola

Pensacola Blue WahoosTalk about a strong start: the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (Class AA; Southern League) have sold out seven of the team’s first 10 home games, pacing the Southern League in attendance.

A sellout crowd of 5,038 last night at Blue Wahoos Park pushed the season average to 4,823, giving the Blue Wahoos an edge over the Jacksonville Suns (4,385 per game) and the Chattanooga Lookouts (4,035).

Of course, it’s ridiculously early in the season to be drawing any conclusions on the attendance front, and we think the true test of the Blue Wahoos’ ability to draw will be on a hot, muggy Tuesday in August. But for now, the new franchise — playing last season as the Carolina Mudcats — is off to a very good start, and we’re guessing Quint and Rishy Studer are pretty happy about all the time, effort and money they put into building a new waterfront ballpark.
