O-Royals cut team name potentials to 24

Omaha RoyalsThe rebranding and a name-the-team contest for the Omaha Royals (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) continues, as the team releases a list of 24 names it says it is considering for use in the 2011 season and beyond.

More than 1,400 names were submitted by fans from August 21-September 6. The team will still be identified as being from Omaha. Team officials selected these 24 names based on Omaha relevance, family-friendliness and fun:

Blue Bombers, Cattlemen, Commanders, Diamond Dogs, Force, Funnel Clouds, Hailstorm, Locomotives, Meadowlarks, Monarchs, Omahogs, Prairie Dogs, Prairie Thunder, Pride, River Rats, Royals, Sizzle, Slayors, Sodbusters, Storm Chasers, Thunderbolts, Thunderbats, Twister, Windwalkers

The club is now inviting fans to vote on their three favorites from the list of 24 by going to oroyals.com. Fans are able to vote from today through September 27th.

On October 4, the team will release a list of the top nine names remaining under consideration and fans will be able to vote online for the one name they like best. In mid-November, Omaha’s Triple-A baseball club will release its team name, mascot, logos and uniforms at a public event.

There’s some history behind some of the names: Omahogs was used for previous minor-league teams in Omaha.
