In a move that was mostly a formality, the Lakewood BlueClaws (Low Class A; Sally League) and the Philadelphia Phillies extended their player-development contract for two more years, through 2012.
“The BlueClaws, their staff, the Township of Lakewood and their great fans have provided the Phillies and our young players a tremendous environment over the last 10 seasons,” said Benny Looper, Phillies Assistant General Manager, Player Personnel. “We are excited to extend what has been an exceptional relationship.”
Thirty-five former BlueClaws have reached the Major Leagues, many with the Phillies, including Ryan Howard, Cole Hamels and Carlos Ruiz, all key members of the Phillies’ 2008 World Series Championship club and ’09 National League Championship club.
“We’re very happy to renew our player development contract with the Phillies,” said BlueClaws General Manager Geoff Brown. “Our fans have been able to see some great players and great baseball and everyone is looking forward to continuing the relationship.”
