Richmond, Flying Squirrels moving toward new ballpark at Diamond site

City/county officials and the ownership of the Richmond Flying Squirrels seem to agree that the best place for a new ballpark is right next to the old one.

City/county officials and the ownership of the Richmond Flying Squirrels (Class AA; Eastern League) seem to agree that the best place for a new ballpark is right next to the old one.

No surprise: we've been reporting that a site at the Boulevard has been the leading contender for months now. It's easily accessible and the land is basically free. The Diamond and its predecessor, Parker Field, have been home to baseball in Richmond since the days of the Richmond Virginians in 1954.

The current plan: build a new ballpark next to The Diamond. When the new ballpark is finished, The Diamond would be torn down. That would impact parking for several years — but that's something all sides could probably live with.
