Cheney Stadium, the home of the Tacoma Rainiers, is set for a $30-million makeover for the 2011 season, complete with new freestanding exterior, redesigned covered concourse, a right-field grass berm with an attached children’s play area, new bleachers beyond the left field wall, 300 club seats behind home plate, a 5000-square-foot club/restaurant, and 16 luxury suites. The designed received preliminary approval this week; final approval will be debated at a March 9 meeting. As part of the financial plan, the Rainiers committed to a 30-year lease for the new ballpark.

The design from Populous will be carried out by construction firm Mortensen. If approved, groundbreaking will begin after the 2010 season in time for the 2011 season.
