A $7.5 million restoration of Birmingham's Rickwood Field will include a new museum honoring the city's rich baseball legacy.
A $7.5 million restoration of Birmingham's Rickwood Field will include a new museum honoring the city's rich baseball legacy.
The restoration will include the addition of a history museum honoring the city's rich baseball heritage, which includes the Birmingham Barons (Class AA; Southern League) and the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro Leagues. The museum will include the noted collection of Dr. Layton Revel, founder of the Center for Negro League Baseball Research, which includes a Satchel Paige uniform and early Negro League contracts.
The target end date for the work: Aug. 18, 2010, to mark the centennial of the ballpark opening.
