Bob Fowler, who bought the Utica Blue Sox (short season; NY-Penn League) from Roger Kahn and crew and put the franchise back on its feet before selling out to Cal Ripken Jr., passed away Thursday.
Fowler was a sportwriter with the Orlando Sentinel when he purchased the Utica team from author Roger Kahn along with Greg Larson (more on the purchase of the team from Time). The franchise wasn’t in very good shape — something Kahn acknowledged in Good Enough to Dream — but Fowler managed to turn things around on the financial front and entering into an affiliation deal with the Phillies before selling the franchise to Ripken, who then moved it to Aberdeen.
