Town leaders are stepping up to form a fundraising drive to raise a half-million dollars to renovate Wausau’s Athletic Park, the WPA-era home of the Wisconsin Woodchucks (summer collegiate; Northwoods League).

The ballpark, which opened in 1936, needs upgrades to its food-prep areas after county health inspectors mandated improvements. As part of that, the Woodchucks owners would like to see upgrades to the grandstand and restrooms.

To that end, civic leaders in Wausau, led by Jeff Campo, are forming a fundraising committee to raise the funds. Saving old ballparks is always a worthy goal. and Athletic Park is one of those small gems deserving of preservation: it’s still a working ballpark — in fact, the owners of the Woodchucks are willing to sign a lease extension to ensure the ballpark’s future — and it’s a vital part of the community.
