South Atlantic (Sally) League

South Atlantic (Sally) League history

Class D 1908-1917, 1937-1942, 1945-1954, 1960-1962
Class A 1963-present

This is actually the second incarnation of the South Atlantic League. The original Sally League was formed in 1904 and operated through the 1963 season; in 1964 it was renamed the Southern League and exists today as a Class AA league. This league’s origins go back to 1908 and the Carolina Baseball Association, which operated as a Class D league before changing into the North Carolina State League in 1913. In 1953 the North Carolina League combined with the Western Carolina League to form the Tar Heel League. The Tar Heel League shut down in 1954 and then reappeared in 1960 as the Western Carolina League. In 1980 the league took on its present moniker of the South Atlantic League, better known as the Sally League.
