A group is proposing a renovation of Knights Stadium, in its last season as home of the Charlotte Knights (Class AAA; International League), to a racetrack.
The group foresees the transformation of the ballpark to a racetrack, releasing some renderings of a converted ballpark (like the ones above) and setting up Web and Facebook pages. In fact, according to a spokesperson, the group is engaged in “negotiations” over its plan.
Now, it’s hard to know how serious the Castle Speedway group is about actually making the dream work: its marketing director couldn’t make time to chat with the local newspaper and organizers couldn’t make time to make it to a single meeting about the future of the ballpark. And York County (S.C.) officials say they haven’t had a single chat with anyone seeking to convert the ballpark to a racetrack.
The racetrack plan is only one of many floating around out there. If this group is seeking to make a play on the ballpark, they’ll need to do more than just throw up a Website: York County officials say they want to sell the whole site, not act as a landlord or another group or sell off the land in pieces.
