The independent Continental Baseball League will shut down for good at the end of July, according to information posted to the Web by one of the four member teams.

The league struggled to attract fans in smaller markets in Texas, Louisiana and New Mexico. Launched by lawyer Ron Baron and former big leaguer Jay Johnstone, this season the league was down to four teams — the Desert Valley Mountain Lions, the Big Bend Cowboys, the Coastal Kingfish and the Las Cruces Vaqueros.

These four teams have been invited to join the 2011 start-up Pecos League, which could also feature teams in Bisbee, Roswell and Pueblo. Behind the new league, which will have no affiliation with the CBL: the owners of the Las Cruses Vaqueros. (At least that’s what we assume: The Pecos League and the Vaqueros share a phone number.)
