Zoo plan would preserve part of Rosenblatt Stadium

Rosenblatt Stadium may be going away after the end of the Omaha Royals season, but part of it will live on, as the Henry Doorly Zoo plans on preserving portions of the ballpark when it takes control of the property.

Rosenblatt Stadium may be going away after the end of the Omaha Royals (Class AAA; Pacific Coast League) season, but part of it will live on, as the Henry Doorly Zoo plans on preserving portions of the ballpark when it takes control of the property.

There had been talk that the zoo would tear down the ballpark and put up a parking lot, but the plan unveiled yesterday does no such thing. True, most of Rosenblatt Stadium will go away. But instead of a parking lot, the ballpark site will become a tribute to the historic facility in the form of parkland. The "Infield at the Zoo" will keep home plate and the infield, some seating, and the dugouts intact, while an entrance to the zoo will be built to mimic the current Rosenblatt Stadium grandstand. In other words, the current Rosenblatt Stadium entrances will be used as entrances to the zoo, while the ballpark parking will become zoo parking.

The total cost of the project: $33,000, once $3 million or so is spent to tear down the ballpark.
