The agenda for a Madison, AL Planning Commission meeting on Thursday includes a proposed zoning change at Town Madison that would allow for a new ballpark.
Back in July, we noted the potential purchase and relocation of the Mobile BayBears (Class AA; Southern League) by an Arizona investment group. One of the three markets reportedly up for consideration to land the BayBears was Madison, a city that is included in the Huntsville Metropolitan Area.
While Savannah and Baton Rouge were listed as potential destinations as well, a report from WHNT in July quoted an investment pitch from BallCorps, LLC as saying the firm has had discussions with representatives from Madison County and the City of Madison regarding a potential new ballpark in the Town Madison development.
As proposed, a potential rezoning of that Town Madison development would allow for a multipurpose venue in the area. More from WHNT:
It’s contained in the fine print of a Madison Planning Commission meeting set for Thursday night. The item is part of proposed rezoning of the large Town Madison development off Zierdt Road and I-565. The proposal includes the following:
“The most significant new use is a multipurpose venue, which is defined as accommodating a minimum of approximately 3,000 people at one time.”
The Huntsville area has been without professional baseball since the relocation of the Huntsville Stars (Class AA; Southern League), who played their last full season at Joe W. Davis Stadium in 2014. Thursday’s zoning hearing is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. local time.
