A groundbreaking ceremony for a new Augusta GreenJackets (Low A; Sally League) ballpark is set for May 25, marking a milestone for the much-anticipated project.
The GreenJackets are slated to move into a new ballpark next season in North Augusta, SC, where the city is proceeding with the facility’s construction as part of a larger development. In addition to the ballpark, the Riverside Village at Hammonds Ferry is also expected to include housing, lodging, conference space, Class “A” offices, retail, and more.
Construction work on the ballpark has been underway, but next Thursday’s groundbreaking ceremony could help build anticipation for the project. “This day has been years in the making and a special milestone to commemorate a new era of Professional Baseball and Entertainment in the CSRA,” Jeff Eiseman, president & partner of the GreenJackets, said in a statement. ” Although theoretically, we have passed the point where we are beginning construction, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to hold this ‘official’ ceremony and share this momentous day with everyone in the community.”
“The City of North Augusta is pleased the five year effort on this transformational project has made it a reality. Baseball will be an important part making this a regional destination,” North Augusta mayor Bob Pettit said in a statement.” We are looking forward to hearing the words ‘Play ball’ in 2018.”
Finishing the ballpark in time for the 2018 season remains the goal. While officials are excited about what next Thursday’s groundbreaking will mean for the project, they acknowledge that plenty of work remains. More from The Aiken Standard:
North Augusta City Administrator Todd Glover said the stadium is still on tap to be finished in time for the 2018 baseball season.
Glover said he’s excited the groundbreaking has finally arrived, but stopped short of celebrating.
“It is exciting, it is a big step. Now is the hard part,” he said. “We’ve been talking about it for five years, so we’ve built up expectations. Now’s the part that we have to deliver what we said we were going to do.”
Glover confirmed that all bonds have been closed. He also noted that groundbreaking for apartments will take place in coming days.
Next Thursday’s groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled to begin at noon. More information can be found on the GreenJackets’ website.
