One of the more unique broadcasting events in the minors returns tonight, as Jesse Goldberg-Strassler will call his annual re-creation game.
The voice of the Lansing Lugnuts (Low A; Midwest League), Goldberg-Strassler has carved out a tradition in the re-creation games, which serve as homage to broadcasts of the past. Without a view of the action at Cooley Law School Stadium, he will re-create the game’s results using sound effects, while relying on information displayed via computer. (This video from MLive.com offers a good glimpse of the process.)
Goldberg-Strassler, who has called re-creation games going back to 2005, when he was an intern in Brockton, MA, has chosen a fitting date for this year’s game. August 5, 2016 is the 95th anniversary of KDKA airing the first radio broadcast of a major league game, with Harold Arlin calling the action from Forbes Field between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Philadelphia Phillies.
Goldberg-Strassler is, of course, the author of two books from our parent company August Publications: The Baseball Thesaurus and The Football Thesaurus. He also contributes to Ballpark Digest and our sister site Football Stadium Digest. (You can view his work here and here.)
Tonight’s game at Cooley Law School Stadium will feature the Lugnuts hosting the Bowling Green Hot Rods, with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 EST. You can listen to the game via TuneIn Radio.
