One of the more ill-conceived name changes in baseball has been reversed, as the Sioux Falls Canaries (independent; American Association) are back and the Pheasants are gone.
Canaries has been a traditional name of pro baseball teams in Sioux Falls (that and Packers), and dropping the Canaries name was assumed to have hurt the team at the box office.
“Since our ownership group purchased the franchise last May, we have been watching closely and listening to our fans and it became very apparent that the community of Sioux Falls missed the Canaries,” said Canaries CEO/President Tom Garrity. “We are excited to bring the Canaries name and tradition of the club back to the fans of Sioux Falls. After a successful season last year that saw tremendous corporate sponsorship support and attendance rise by 72 percent, we are very eager to get this season started and build off what we started last year.”
The new logos were designed by Fresh Produce of Sioux Falls.
