Fresh off the loss of the Florence RedWolves (summer collegiate; Coastal Plain League) to Francis Marion University’s Sparrow Stadium, Florence officials are considering a new downtown ballpark.
There’s plenty wrong with American Legion Field when it comes to game-day operations: there’s not much space and there are no basic amenities like clubhouses or workout facilities, so it’s no surprise the RedWolves bailed. And other athletic facilities, such as the high-school football field, are sorely lacking.
So the Florence city-county conference committee opened a discussion of the future of athletic facilites. Nothing tangible was presented, and discussion included both a new downtown facility and a renovation of American Legion Field to include clubhouses and other amenities.
