Quincy Civic Center Authority members expressed concern that the Quincy Gems (summer collegiate; Prospect League) posted a $23,178 loss in 2012.
The Gems took in $225,749 in revenue and spent $248,927. The team management was expecting more on the revenue front, but ticket revenue and beer sales were down this past season. At the end of the day, the Gems averaged only 908 fans per game, down some 9 percent over 2011.
With public ownership of the team there’s always some questioning why a government body will cover losses on a baseball team. While it doesn’t sound like there will be review of team operations, you can expect one next year if the team posts another loss.
