Avista Stadium, the home of the Spokane Indians (short season A; Northwest League), is being outfitted with a hockey rink, as the ballpark will be hosting the first outdoor junior Western Hockey League game this coming weekend.
The game features the Spokane Chiefs hosting the Kootenay Ice. The Chiefs and the Indians have the same ownership in Brett Sports.
If you’ve never seen a portable ice arena installed, it’s quite the process. The base of the rink consists of 240 aluminum plates connected by over 600 feet of piping to large portable refrigeration units.
As you can tell from the above photo — captured earlier today from the ballpark webcam — much of the work has already been done in anticipation of Saturday’s 1 p.m. game.
