For some reason the New York Yankees have banned Apple iPads from Yankee Stadium, causing a great stir in the tech-geek world, though we can't think of a single reason why anyone would bring the device to the ballpark.
The ostensible reason, say the Yankees, is that they're akin to laptops, which are also banned from the ballpark (apart from the press box, of course). Of course, one could see the iPad becoming a projectile in the wrong hands — not the iPad owners' hands.
But an iPad is of limited use in the ballpark, anyway. The Yankees are one of the few teams to sell in-market rights to local broadcasts, so one could watch replays and such on the iPad — but this would be close to worthless, because for some reason there's a rather sizeable delay between the actual game and when it's streamed on mlb.com. The Yankees do like to project a high level of control, and we're guessing this issue has less to do with the specific merits of the iPad and more about that high level of control.
